Why Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties Is Trending

The Yakuza/Like a Dragon series is one of gaming's most beloved RPG franchises, and Kiwami 3 marks the long-awaited remake of the Okinawa chapter — widely considered the most emotionally resonant entry in the original series. Released February 11, 2026 by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, it arrives alongside a brand-new gaiden story called Dark Ties, making this a substantial package for both longtime fans and newcomers curious about Kiryu's legacy.

Reviews are positive but measured — critics praise the revamped combat and emotional storytelling while noting the Dark Ties gaiden feels somewhat underdeveloped. Still, the return to Okinawa's Morning Glory Orphanage has resonated with fans, generating strong conversation on Reddit and social media about the series' future direction.

Players who can overlook controversial casting changes describe this as a fun, mechanically improved Yakuza game with a heartfelt Okinawa story. The main criticism — shared across hundreds of reviews — is that RGG made significant changes fans didn't want: recasting beloved characters, altering the soundtrack, and not addressing a petition with 10,000+ signatures.

A review from someone who isn't a complete doomer: I've played through every game, even the old Japan-only ones. Yes, there are issues — the recasting and soundtrack changes are real complaints. But the game itself? Solid Yakuza. The Dragon Engine combat feels great, the Okinawa setting still hits emotionally, and Kiryu's arc carries.

I'm having fun and it's a good game so far. However I do not think it's a good replacement for Yakuza 3. This game would be better if it were allowed to live alongside Y3 Remastered — they serve different purposes. As a standalone Yakuza game, it's enjoyable. As a replacement for the original, it falls short.

I'm really enjoying the game. Having played and 100%'d the remastered version, this one feels more fun gameplay-wise. The combat feels more fun and intense, the graphics are impressive, and the Okinawa story still lands. If you go in knowing it's a reimagining rather than a 1:1 remake, you'll have a good time.

👎 Not Recommended 33h played

Soundtrack replaced with inferior tracks (except Dark Ties itself). Fan-favourite characters recast with no community input. A 10,000-signature petition to fix Kagawa was ignored. The story is still emotionally effective, but RGG made avoidable choices that hurt the experience for longtime fans.

RGG does not know what "remake" means. Play Yakuza 3 Remastered instead — though SEGA delisted it unless you buy the entire 0-6 bundle. To someone unfamiliar with the series the game might look fine, but for fans it's a step back in meaningful ways. The original Remastered version did less damage.
