Terra Invicta

The most ambitious alien-invasion grand strategy ever made

Why Terra Invicta Is Trending

Terra Invicta exited Early Access on January 5, 2026 after over three years of development — and the strategy community took notice immediately. Pavonis Interactive's alien-invasion grand strategy had been one of the most complex games in Early Access, and its 1.0 launch brought a flood of new players curious whether the madness was finally tamed.

Rock Paper Shotgun, PC Gamer, and Turn Based Lovers all reviewed the full release, noting that while the learning curve remains brutal, the depth and ambition are genuinely unmatched. Hooded Horse's continued support (publishers of Menace and other acclaimed strategy titles) gives the game serious credibility.

About Terra Invicta

Terra Invicta is a near-future grand strategy game where an alien invasion has fractured humanity into seven competing ideological factions — each with a radically different response to the extraterrestrial threat. You choose your faction and use political manipulation, espionage, propaganda, and military force to take control of Earth's nations, their armies, and their space programs.

As the game progresses, the conflict expands beyond Earth into the Solar System itself. You'll build space infrastructure, manage fleets of warships, and engage in tactical space combat against alien forces and rival human factions. The sheer scope — from managing the US Senate to building a fleet around Jupiter — is staggering.

The team behind Terra Invicta has roots in the XCOM Long War mod community, and that DNA is evident: every system is deeply interconnected, every decision has cascading consequences, and the difficulty is unforgiving. But for players who can crack the shell, the reward is one of the most unique strategy experiences in years.

What Players Are Saying

✅ Reasons to Play

  • Unmatched scope — from Earth politics to Solar System conquest
  • Seven unique factions with genuinely different playstyles and ideologies
  • Deep, interlocking systems reward mastery over dozens of hours
  • Hooded Horse publisher pedigree means excellent ongoing support
  • A truly unique concept — no other strategy game does this

❌ Things to Consider

  • One of the steepest learning curves in the genre — prepare for wiki-reading
  • Early pacing is slow; the first few hours can feel like a spreadsheet
  • Aliens feel abstract for much of the campaign — not a lot of direct combat early on
  • UI can feel overwhelming until you internalize the system

This game is actually somewhat challenging for me to recommend to many people. I think this game has something a lot of people have trouble with (as evidenced by some other reviews, which I think are people correctly identifying that this game does not work for them) so I just…

I really don’t want to give this game a thumbs up - but giving it a thumbs down would also feel unfair. So here we go. TL;DR: The early and mid‑game is fantastic. Unfortunately, in more than 30 years of playing PC and console games, I’ve never had my motivation collapse as…

If you spent years getting your teeth kicked in by Pavonis Interactive's Long War mods for XCOM, you already know the pedigree here. When I heard they were making a standalone grand strategy game, I went in expecting that same brand of tactical brutality. I thought I was…

After 200 hours, I feel like I finally understand the very basic principles. Maybe. I might even get through the early game, once. Possibly. 10/10

Do you like spreadsheets? Did you finish all XCOM games 100%? Do you have a form of autism? If any or preferably all of the above are true you will love this game. It's an amazing game, but it takes special people to really appeciate it's grandeur.

The opening Earth phase is long, tedious, repetitive actions just to get the numbers up to the right place, after which the space combat phase is hampered by clunky, unintuitive controls. Nice idea, poorly executed.

Is Terra Invicta Worth Playing in 2026?

Is Terra Invicta worth playing in 2026?

Yes — for hardcore strategy fans. Terra Invicta's full 1.0 release in January 2026 fixed many Early Access rough edges. If you love grand strategy games like XCOM, Stellaris, or Paradox titles, its depth and scope are genuinely unmatched. Casual players should approach with caution — this is not a friendly game.

How hard is Terra Invicta?

Very hard. Terra Invicta has one of the steepest learning curves in modern strategy gaming. Expect several hours of tutorial reading and trial-and-error before the systems click. Reviewers consistently note that the complexity is a feature, not a bug — but it will filter out players who want instant gratification.

How long is Terra Invicta?

A full campaign can take 80–200+ hours depending on difficulty and faction. The game spans from 2026 to the far future as humanity expands across the Solar System, with enormous content to unpack. Most players report multiple campaign attempts before they fully understand the systems.

What factions can you play in Terra Invicta?

There are seven playable factions with distinct ideologies: The Initiative (exploit the aliens for profit), Resistance (fight them directly), Humanity First (annihilate all aliens), Servants (welcome and serve the invaders), Project Exodus (flee the Solar System entirely), Academy (study and learn from them), and Protectorate (negotiate a compromise). Each faction has unique mechanics and win conditions.
