Metaphor: ReFantazio — Is It Worth Playing in 2026?

1,999 players at 24-hour peak
PC (Steam) Rpg $69.99 Very Positive 18,355 reviews

Why Metaphor: ReFantazio Is Trending Right Now

Metaphor: ReFantazio isn't climbing the charts—it's down 59% week-over-week after 504 days post-launch. That's expected for a mature release. What matters: 18,355 reviews averaging 93% positive, a 92 Metacritic score, and a solid 1,999-player 24h peak that would be respectable for games half its age.

Here's why it matters: players consistently call it the best ATLUS game ever made, ranking it above Persona and SMT franchises. The draw is a politically-charged fantasy story with exceptional character writing and turn-based combat that rewards strategy. It's not actively trending because it's still niche—but it's beloved by everyone who actually plays it.

Yo this game is peak ngl. I don't think a JRPG can get any better than this. Great story, great characcters, the combat system is fun and challenging. Has probably one of the best antagonists in gaming and fiction, very well-put together game.

Metaphor: Refantazio, in my opinion, is the best Atlus game. Better than all persona and smt games I've played.

If you like Persona/SMT combat then you'll enjoy that side of things. It's more akin to Digital Devil Saga when it comes to progression. The story is decent. The music is excellent. Definitely worth checking out.

👎 Not Recommended 42h played

Great art, nice soundtrack. Here and there some nice worldbuilding. Nice mechanical updates to the Persona systems. However, that sorry excuse of a story is just embarrassing. Characters as deep are as a puddle. What were they doing for 10 years? You can see the studio has talented artists and designers. But their work is wasted on whatever the author would pass.

Common Questions About Metaphor: ReFantazio

Is this game actually worth playing in 2026?

Yes. 93% positive from 18,355 reviews and a 92 Metacritic don't decline over time. You're looking at quality that competes with Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem. The -59% weekly drop is normal for mature releases—it signals the hype cycle is over, not that the game got worse.

What's the actual gameplay like?

100-150 hours of turn-based combat mixed with action sequences, social link building with party members, and exploration. Character customization via Archetypes is deep. Expect Persona 5's calendar system meets Fire Emblem's tactics meets a complex political storyline.

How long is it and can I replay it?

Single playthrough runs 100-150+ hours depending on side content. New Game+ carries archetype progress forward, and different character builds create varied playthroughs. No multiplayer, but high replayability for solo players.

Is it worth the $69.99 price tag?

For JRPG fans: absolutely—you're paying ~$0.50 per hour for award-winning content. For casual players: no. The 100+ hour commitment and niche genre make this an 'all in' purchase, not a 'try it and see' one.

Is it free to play?

No, Metaphor Refantazio costs $69.99 on Steam. It is not a free-to-play game, though Steam sales occasionally offer discounts.
