Dungeon Alchemist — Is It Worth Playing in 2026?

246 players at 24-hour peak
PC (Steam) Rpg $35.99 Very Positive 2,833 reviews

Why Dungeon Alchemist Is Trending Right Now

Dungeon Alchemist maintains a rare 95% positive rating with 2,833 reviews, but its 246 24h peak CCU dropped 44% week-over-week. The mapmaking software remains beloved by D&D creators, though the steep player decline suggests the tool may have hit market saturation or users aren't keeping the application constantly running.

Unlike general 3D editors, Dungeon Alchemist is purpose-built for tabletop RPG map creation—targeting D&D DMs and VTT users who need battle maps and encounter locations fast. The tool's niche focus (dungeons, interiors, taverns) and community asset marketplace make it the specialized alternative to learning expensive software from scratch.

Players love Dungeon Alchemist for mixing speed (auto-generate rooms instantly) with granular control (micromanage walls, floors, furniture, decor). The main friction: steep UI learning curve and the -44% player decline signaling either market saturation or that the tool reached its core audience.

Honestly this is the best map building tool I've come across. Everything looks great, and you can tell the game to build rooms for you if you're in a hurry - or (if you're like me) micromanage every little detail, from walls and floors to furniture and decor. It'll take some practice to get the hang of the UI, but it's pretty intuitive.

A good 3D design program. It's improved since I started using it, and it's always been good to put together a diorama.

I use it for making maps for my D&D games. I love it. The community uploads really helped to expand the objects you can use in your maps.

Amazing software, so much potential in the vtt map making scene. Im excited for what the future holds for it.

👍 Recommended 15h played

Easy to create maps and practical.

👎 Not Recommended 21h played

Not great especially for the price, there are a lot better tools that do the same thing for cheaper. I personally switched to inkarnate. Also the "automatically generate rooms" feature is greatly exaggerated from what it is advertised as, when I tried it in game everything I generated wasn't usable.

Common Questions About Dungeon Alchemist

Is Dungeon Alchemist worth buying in 2026?

Yes, if you run D&D campaigns regularly. The 95% positive rating from 2,833 reviews proves it solves mapmaking better than alternatives—worth $35.99 as a one-time purchase. Main concern: player count is down 44% week-over-week, suggesting market saturation or seasonal slowdown. But high reviews indicate users who buy it stay satisfied.

How many players does Dungeon Alchemist have?

246 at 24h peak, down 44% from last week. For context: this is mapmaking software, so 'players' means active users with the app open—not concurrent game sessions. The decline is notable but could reflect seasonal patterns (end of campaign season) or that the existing user base got what they needed.

Is Dungeon Alchemist multiplayer or co-op?

No. Dungeon Alchemist is single-player mapmaking software. You create maps alone, then export them for use in VTTs (D&D Beyond, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds) or print for physical play. The community shares custom assets to expand the decoration library, but the tool itself isn't multiplayer.

How long does it take to beat Dungeon Alchemist?

There's no 'beating' it—it's a mapmaking tool, not a game. Expect a 1-2 hour learning curve on the UI. Once proficient: procedurally-generated maps take minutes, hand-crafted detailed maps take 30 minutes to 2+ hours depending on ambition. It's a lifetime tool purchase for ongoing campaign prep, not a one-off playthrough.

Is it free to play?

No, Dungeon Alchemist costs $246 on Steam. It is not a free-to-play game, though Steam sales occasionally offer discounts.

How many people play Dungeon Alchemist?

Dungeon Alchemist has reached 246 concurrent players at its 24-hour peak. Player counts fluctuate with updates, sales, and new content — check SteamDB for the latest live data.
